Topic description
On completion of this topic students should have developed their philosophy pertaining to outdoor education; be versed with, and practised in, the organisational aspects of conducting an educational camping experience; have an appreciation of the roles that many disciplines can play in the development and conduct of an integrated educational program pertinent to the area; have developed personal, camping and outdoor recreational skills to a level where they would be aware of the issues and aspects involved in taking a support role on a camp or in an outdoor education program; and be aware of the safety procedures and legal implications of taking students for camping experiences.
Educational aims
Students will be provided with the opportunity to be introduced to:

  • the role of planner, organiser and leader of camps and outdoor education programs

  • policies involving extensive outdoor education experiences

  • the conduct of OE experiences which vary from standing camps to living for a period of time in tents in environments as diverse as snow, semi arid, aquatic and mountainous

  • experiences in several camping situations where, not only the fundamentals of camping administration, knowledge and skills are covered but also, how an integrated educational programme can be developed
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic students should be able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of the organisational aspects of conducting an educational camping experience

  • demonstrate knowledge of the contribution of outdoor education in the development and conduct of an integrated educational programme

  • use personal camping, bushwalking, and outdoor recreational skills at a leadership level

  • demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures and legal implications in outdoor education experiences
