Topic description
Most teachers will at some stage of their career be involved with sport as a school sport coach, school sport team manager, swimming and athletics carnivals organising committee or official, or community sport coach. This topic introduces students to sport coaching, management and administration. This topic incorporates a sport practical so that students can consider and experience the coaching, management and administration issues related to sport as a community practice from a practical and theoretical standpoint in an applied setting.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are for the students to:

  • be introduced to the knowledge, skills and understanding underpinning sport coaching, management and administration

  • apply the acquired knowledge, skills and understanding in coaching and practice settings

  • be introduced to tools that assist a tactical analysis of play

  • plan training to meet the physical demands of selected sports

  • explain key concepts in the management and administration of sport

  • consider relevant learning theory and understand its practical application in the coaching of sport

  • complete the Australian Sports Commission General Principles of Coaching Course
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge underpinning sport coaching, management and administration

  • apply sport coaching, management and administration knowledge and understanding in an applied practical setting

  • apply an understanding of sport coaching, management and administration to the design of a yearly training and management plan for a sport

  • demonstrate understand of relevant learning theories and their application in the coaching of sport
