5 Tutorial Papers (50%): Final Essay (50%)

The topic combines an appreciation of the legal governance of health care with the professional governance of the ethical conduct of health practitioners across a range of professional areas. Students will gain a basic but clear appreciation of their legal duties and ethical imperatives. Attention is also paid to the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate the quality of assertions made about values in health care

The aim of this topic is to:

• introduce students to a broad variety of contemporary ethical and legal issues emerging within the health care system
• provide a framework for resolving problems as they apply to health service delivery.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

• demonstrate an appreciation of the legal and ethical requirements governing health care professions in South Australia

• identify the main forms of legal reasoning

• critically examine health care ethics codes

• understand how ethics codes operate in relation to professional conduct

• demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and legal requirements that shape consent procedures in health care

• apply basic critical thinking skills to the concepts employed in discussions about values in health care.
