Topic description
Health Promotion for Health Professionals is a foundation health promotion topic. It examines the Primary Health Care approach to health promotion and does so from the position that health promotion is an important component of primary health care. It shows that health promotion is a more potent force if it is driven by the primary health care philosophy and teaches students that health promotion is 'everybody's business'.
Educational aims
To introduce students to the skills and knowledge required to enable populations to increase control over, and to improve their health, through a primary health care approach.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the 'new public health' model based on the social model of health

  • demonstrate and understanding of the theories and principles of health promotion that are underpinned by the Ottawa Charter and social determinants of health

  • demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge base to practice effectively in the area of planning and evaluation in health promotion

  • undertake the roles, responsibilities skills and competencies of a health promotion professional.
