Topic description
The topic explores the context of health care practice using a population focus. The topic examines the way in which practice is organised across a range of population groups or disease categories, eg. Indigenous, Mental, Aged, Rural health care and Sexual, Drug, Nutrition and Physical health. The focus is on providing students with a framework for on-going development of their own philosophy of professional practice through examining the lived experience of illness and practice.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • expose students to the tension between the patient's lived experience of illness and the boundaries of professional practice

  • assist students to assimilate knowledge of the lived experience with critical analysis of professional practice as found in practice guideline

  • extend student' knowledge of key social concepts that inform both the lived experience of illness, and health practice

  • explore how the social concepts (eg., deinstitutionalisation) that underpin practice form the basis for understanding professional care of specific population groups. Eg Indigenous peoples

  • provide students with knowledge and skills for critically analysing qualitative research accounts of illness and practice

  • equip students with the skills and processes used in the production of evidence-based knowledge as found in systematic literature reviews.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • Articulate a personal philosophy of care as it related the student's chosen profession

  • Indentify the way in which their personal philosophy of care is shaped by the lived experience of illness, but also by the constraints on professional practice arising from the structure of the health care system

  • Efficiently search for up-to-date health evidence in journals and on the web

  • Recognise and evaluate the rigour of qualitative research accounts

  • Write a clear summary/systematic literature review of a health care policy issue

  • Extend group work skills developed in HLTH1305 Health Professional Practice 1 to respectful discussion and development of one's own ideas using the tutorial format.
