Topic description
Indonesia has a thriving film industry. This topic explores how Indonesian film makers have explored the post-Suharto era, exploring through film key concerns of contemporary Indonesia moves into a new political era, and redefines its identity. Areas studied include independent film-makers, women film-makers, ethnic minority communities, rural communities and youth stories.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  • explore the dynamic nature of contemporary Indonesian society through the work of contemporary film-makers;

  • present feature films, documentaries, mainstream and independent films of the post-Suharto period;

  • provide opportunity to analyse the social, political and religious preoccupations of contemporary Indonesia as conveyed through film;

  • help develop students’ scholarly reading, writing and analytical skills and

  • provide opportunities to present and debate ideas in a group format
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify the key trends in contemporary Indonesian cinema;

  • discuss and write about key features of contemporary Indonesian society as represented in Indonesian film;

  • locate and analyse relevant scholarly texts and present academic arguments in oral and written form;

  • present ideas both verbally and in writing
