Topic description
This topic integrates advanced language skills with the study of Indonesian culture and society. There is no textbook. Readings and supplementary materials are provided in the class. Study materials are selected from online sources, newspaper and magazine articles, as well as documentaries, feature films and literature. The Topic will progressively develop the language and research techniques necessary for successful seminar presentations.
Educational aims
This topic aims principally to develop students' language and analytical abilities through individual research. It will provide the skills required for identifying issues of importance in a field relevant to the students' degree program and/or interests, and then designing and implementing appropriate small research projects.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Produce pieces of description, narration, exposition and argument.

  • Use various methods of giving evidence to support a thesis

  • Rewrite texts to change the genre

  • Analyse Indonesian novels and provide commentaries.

  • Interpret and translate moderately complex ideas of given texts from Indonesian into English with ease and a high degree of accuracy, including oral spontaneous translations.
