Topic description
The topic will examine Indonesian societies and cultures including indigenous communities and belief systems, Hindu Bali, the religion of Java, the place of Islam, the impact of colonialism and the West, legacies of the revolution and the Sukarno and Suharto years. Gender, development, human rights and environmental issues will be critically analysed.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • examine a broad understanding of the culture, society and politics of Indonesia

  • introduce the religions of Indonesia, and analyse their influences on Indonesian society and communities

  • develop a critical understanding of the influences of colonialism and politics on Indonesian society
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. Examine and compare the diversity of languages and cultures in Indonesia, and their influences

  2. Identify the essential elements of different cultural communities and religions

  3. Compare the influences of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam on Indonesia

  4. Analyse critically the legacies of Dutch colonial rule, the Indonesian revolution, and the Independence period

  5. Examine Indonesian development issues, and place these in a global context

  6. Discuss the main themes in modern Indonesian literature through the writings of Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
