Topic description
This topic explores the idea of global regions such as ‘Africa’, ‘the Orient’, ‘the West’, ‘Asia’, ‘America’ and the forces that shape and define these ideas. The topic introduces students to several regions including Asia and Australia, and analyses the aspects that make them distinctive; the challenges and opportunities they face; their interrelationships and their location within global systems. Through this lens of regional understanding, the topic examines Australia’s place in the world and its connections to several regions. The topic is structured around the various approaches Social Science uses to analyse the complex processes that produce spatial structures of interconnection and around developing essential academic skills.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
  1. Give students a substantial grounding in Area Studies
  2. Cultivate students’ understanding of global regions and their impact on/significance to Australia
  3. Provide students with opportunities to develop communication skills - oral and written
  4. Provide opportunities to practice appropriate research, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Expected learning outcomes
On succesful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  1. Discuss major characteristics of at least three global regions including Asia and Australia
  2. Demonstrate familiarity with the concept of ‘international region’ and its relevance to both global and Australian interests
  3. Analyse probable causes and consequences of regional transformations
  4. Comprehend, critically analyse and use appropriate evidence in constructing a reasoned and coherent argument and communicate their ideas and arguments verbally and in writing,
  5. Identify their own learning goals and make plans, direct (or re-direct) their activities and evaluate or assess their own progress towards meeting them. This includes seeking appropriate assistance along the way.
