A compulsory core topic in the Bachelor of International Studies available as an elective only with approval of Course Advisor.
Topic description
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
  1. Give students an opportunity to learn work-readiness in a simulated workplace or further develop work-readiness in students with prior workplace experience.
  2. Give students an opportunity to apply their international awareness and relevant knowledge when solving workplace problems.
  3. Support students to create a career plan, which incorporates strategic choices and personal development.
  4. Provide students with opportunities to develop communication skills - oral and written - with special attention to communicating across cultural, linguistic, and disciplinary boundaries in professional settings.
  5. Provide opportunities to rehearse appropriate research, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  1. Apply their understanding of Australia’s international objectives to a workplace setting.
  2. Articulate a methodological approach to intercultural communication and demonstrate appropriate practical skills.
  3. Demonstrate their capacity to manage their individual and group workload according to (Australian or other) workplace conventions.
  4. Identify the implications of international and/or cultural difference in workplaces.
  5. Communicate their ideas and arguments verbally and in writing.
  6. Identify their own learning goals and make plans, direct (or re-direct) their activities and evaluate or assess their own progress towards meeting them. This includes seeking appropriate assistance along the way.
