This topic examines the importance of International Interventions in Africa, focusing on International relations. Issues covered will include - The Responsibility to Protect; Civil Conflict; Failed States; The Rwandan Genocide; China in Africa; Gender; The African Union and Security; and a hypothetical scenario involving an intervention in Africa.

This topic aims to:

develop an indepth understanding of the key issues in African International Relations
introduce students to a range of research methods and demonstrate a basic level of competence in the use of a variety of disciplinary research methods, in particular International Relations
develop comparative analytical skills and research skills, particularly in relation to political, economic and historical events in one country and the impact it has on others
conduct an indepth research project and write a report or essay addressing a particular case study from Africa
provide an opportunity to participate in a hypothetical.

On successful completion of this topic, students should be able to:

Demonstrate competence in the use of a variety of disciplinary research methods, in particular International Relations and be able to apply that to specific case studies in African studies
Analyze and evaluate international interventions in Africa, particularly in relation to political, economic and historical events in one country and the impact it has on others, within the framework of globalisation
Prepare and develop a substantial research project that documents how a given research question might be addressed
Conduct independent research and write a report or essay
Develop communication and analytical skills through the hypothetical
Apply knowledge to other areas of study and future work placements
