Topic description
This topic investigates the origins, institutional underpinnings and logic of development of the post-war trading and financial systems (generally known as 'the Bretton Woods System'). Primary attention is given to the intersection between this system and the Cold War environment in which it operated, and to latter-day arguments about 'the death of Bretton Woods' touched off by the 1971 abandonment of fixed exchange rates. Considerable attention is also given to the particular case of oil and the implications of successive oil price shocks for the trade and payments systems.
