Topic description
This topic covers the devetopment of modern Western management theories and approaches: classical, behavioural, quantitative and contemporary. These concepts have particular relevance to managers and executives in economies undergoing significant economic change in effectively managing resources, human and capital in widely differing contextual environments. The topic considers the primary functions of managers as they work to achieve required performance outcomes. Finally, the topic considers the skills involved in managing organisations through change and conflict and overcoming resistance to change.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students w¡th a solid understanding of a wide range of management theory and practice as a resource which can be applied to business or state owned enterprises as they develop into modern competitive outcomes focused organisations.
Expected learning outcomes
Students completing this topic should be able to:
  • Have a working knowledge of a wide range of management concepts and models
  • ldentify and select appropriate management concepts and models for particular management situations
  • Have a clear understanding of the roles, functions and responsibilities of a manager
  • Have the knowledge and skills to effectively manage change in an organisation and to overcome and minimise conflict which frequently arises in an organisation undergoing change
