Students will be expected to have completed topics in the Graduate Diploma Year at an overall average grade of 70% or above.
Topic description
Supervised research on an approved subject relating to international relations, leading to the writing of a research paper of around 9,000 words. The research paper should provide evidence of the student's ability to collect and evaluate information; construct, test and defend an argument; and critically examine theories and empirical trends in the area of academic enquiry. The supervisor of the research paper will not be an examiner.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:
- provide an opportunity for MAIR students to engage in supervised academic and professional analysis of issues and problems in international relations
- inform students about the state of the academic literature and international practice with respect to a select range of issues
- encourage advanced-level academic argument
- further develop students' skills in academic research, bibliographic analysis and professional writing
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
- engage in advanced-level academic and professional analysis of issues and problems in international relations
- be informed about the state of the academic literature and political practice with respect to a select range of issues
- demonstrate research skills in an area of academic study in which they have an interest
- apply effective and independent study skills
- apply developed skills in academic research, bibliographic analysis and professional writing
