Topic description
This topic will give students the opportunity to engage in supervised study in a specialist area with the objective of producing a small research paper under the supervision of a member of staff teaching in the Latin American Studies Major. It is only available to students who are completing a major in Latin American Studies and who are approved by the coordinator.
Educational aims
This topic will focus on an identified specialist area of study to be undertaken independently by the nominating student. A student will be expected to choose a specialist area of study in consultation with an individual member of staff and with the approval of the coordinator of the Latin American Studies program. Topic content will focus on the supervised reading and research program in the specialist area chosen by the student.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students will be able to:
  • identify and understand the academic literature and debates shaping the issue/topic chosen for investigation
  • reveal a critical understanding of the core debates and issues raisedby the chosen topic including drawing logical conclusions from the evidence obtained
  • demonstrate a capacity to articulate and illustrate the implications of the analysis using empirical evidence/a case study for understanding a particular issue in the field of Latin American Studies
  • conduct independent research and critical evaluation in the chosen area.
