Topic description
In this topic, we explore the role of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) in the process of learning a second or foreign language. Topics addressed include: Specificity of the language of CMC; different types of CMC and their potential uses in the language classroom, based on the literature on second language acquisition and teaching methodology; pedagogical and technical issues connected with the use of CMC in the language classroom.
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop:

  • students' knowledge of theoretical and practical issues concerned with the use of computer-mediated communication in the language classroom

  • students' ability to evaluate, design and integrate pedagogically sound CMC-based materials and activities for language learning
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • examine and recognise the main theoretical bases related to the use of CMC in the language classroom

  • compare, contrast and critique CMC-based language teaching and learning materials, in light of the second language acquisition and teaching methodology principles discussed throughout the semester

  • design pedagogically sound learning and teaching materials and activities using CMC technology
