Students will be expected to have a good command of a broad range of linguistic, lexical and stylistic features commensurable with Honours study.

Thesis

This topic offers Honours students the opportunity to undertake extended research in selected areas of French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek, or Spanish Studies.

Amongst the possible topic areas available are: Literature, cultural studies (including cinema, theatre and history), applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, language education, and migration. Supervision in these fields of study are subject to staff availability.

Theses may be written in English on in the language of study depending on language proficiency. Prospective students are advised to consult with their Honours Coordinator before enrolling in Honours to discuss their area(s) of research and possible research topic(s).

The topic aims to:

• enable students to investigate in depth one particular area of French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek, or Spanish Studies.
• expand further students' knowledge of complex linguistic and/or socio-cultural issues related to the societies where their language of study is spoken.
• further enhance students' analytical, critical and research skills, through the study of complex texts, and through engagement in individual research projects, in which they apply research techniques and methodologies appropriate to their field of study

Upon completion of the topic, students will be able to:

• demonstrate advanced knowledge of linguistic, cultural and/or societal issues pertaining to the communities in which their language of study is spoken.
• read, interpret, paraphrase, summarise and evaluate, and critique articles, essays, reports and, argumentative texts (historical, artistic, cultural, social) in the chosen field of study, both in English and the language of study
• define and investigate a research topic through the completion of a thesis, by using a research methodology appropriate to the field of study.
• demonstrate autonomy and ethical behaviour towards the work produced in the topic.
  if the thesis is written in the target language, communicate complex ideas, concepts and theories in the target language at a near-native proficiency level
