Students will be expected to have a good command of a broad range of linguistic, lexical and stylistic features commensurable with Honours study.

Assignment(s), Oral

This topic offers students undertaking study in a language other than English the opportunity to further extend their written and spoken language skills French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek, or Spanish.

Students will complete a portfolio of oral and written activities related to their target language, as directed by the topic coordinator in conjunction with the language-specific supervisor. The portfolio will require students to demonstrate a relatively high degree of language control allowing them to clearly present and/or discuss most general topics.

The content of the topic, and the contact hours are to be negotiated with the topic coordinator.

The topic aims to:

• provide students with the opportunity to extend their oral and written target language proficiency in the areas of vocabulary, grammar, syntax and stylistics, to be used effectively and fluently for in a range of contexts including contexts where the language is used for academic purposes.
• introduce students to an extended range of relatively complex, authentic sources in their target language, including oral, and written, visual and digital texts.
• engage students with a range of general topics in their target language, through a portfolio of activities.

Upon completion of the topic, students will be able to:

• apply moderately complex language to communicate both verbally and in writing in their target language.
• analyse, critique and respond to, complex authentic texts in the target language orally and in writing.
• demonstrate extensive knowledge of past and contemporary socio-cultural issues pertaining to the communities in which their language of study is spoken.
• demonstrate ethical behaviour towards the work produced in the topic.
