Topic description
This topic offers students possibilities to extend further previous knowledge in the broad field of language studies (French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek and Spanish). Students may be required to undertake classroom-based study or independent study on a topic to be negotiated with their supervisor, depending on staff availability.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  • provide advanced practical language training, according to the level of entry chosen, relative to either the study of French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek or Spanish

  • expose students to an in-depth body of knowledge relative to linguistic and/or cultural aspects of language studies

  • train students to form broad conceptual understandings while gaining in-depth of knowledge of linguistic and/or socio-cultural aspects of language studies, through coursework or through a supervised study project

  • develop students' linguistic, analytical and critical skills through the production of a detailed report on a defined area of language studies
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of the topic, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an advanced level of proficiency in any of the four language skills

  • gain broad knowledge of linguistic and/or socio-cultural aspects of language studies, relative to either French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek, or Spanish, according to the area of specialisation chosen

  • show advanced critical understanding of linguistic and/or socio-cultural issues and principles underpinning the chosen area of Language Studies and knowledge of current issues therein

  • demonstrate reporting skills relative to a defined area of Language Studies
