Topic description
Language in Society examines ways in which social and interpersonal factors influence language variation and vice versa. Some of the issues discussed in this topic include: Regional variation in English and Romance languages, language and social class/status, language and gender, language and subcultures, language and new media (for example, the language of SMS), languages in contact and situational variation (e.g., formal vs. informal; written vs. spoken).
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop:
- knowledge of sociolinguistic theories and concepts, both in general terms, and in their applications to the specificity of a chosen language (English, French or Italian)
- students' ability to analyse a variety of authentic texts to identify linguistic features that are characteristic of specific textual genres and registers
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- summarise and illustrate the theoretical concepts introduced during the course
- recognise, describe and analyse texts produced in the varieties of language discussed during the semester
- design and carry out small-scale investigation projects focusing on one or more varieties of language
