Topic description
In all professions the ability to communicate effectively in the workplace is imperative. A number of diverse professionals are also required to understand legal terminology and to use it within their employment. This topic incorporates the use of clear concise English language and the use of legal terminology to provide a foundation for confident oral and written communication with a legal emphasis.
Educational aims
This topic aims to assist students to:

  • develop the skills and understanding necessary for effective communication - both written and oral - in the workplace

  • emphasise the use of plain, concise, accurate English in writing documents, integrating relevant legal terminology

  • revise English usage, grammar, syntax and punctuation

  • examine and produce typical workplace documents such as employment applications, letters, emails and reports
Expected learning outcomes
Upon the completion of the topic it is expected that students will have:

  • learned how to communicate effectively using relevant legal terminology

  • acquired the skills to prepare and present an argumentative essay on a topic of legal relevance

  • mastered editing and proofreading skills

  • participated effectively in a collaborative research team

  • demonstrated their competence by satisfactorily completing a range of assignments
