Topic description
An understanding of social and socio-legal research methods is highly regarded in the workplace and essential for successful completion of honours and postgraduate studies. This research methods topic brings together a range of essential research skills designed to provide students with a grounding in social science research skills. As a basis for rigorous conceptual and practical research it will emphasise the necessity of sound preparation, planning and attention to the process of research. Students will develop the ability to ask their own research questions and seek the answer for themselves.
Educational aims
This topic aims to assist students to:

  • develop a sound understanding of a variety of socio-legal research methods

  • identify the links between methods, legal and social theory and practice

  • plan and develop both independent and collaborative research proposals
Expected learning outcomes
Upon the completion of the topic it is expected that students will have developed the ability to:

  • critically analyse a research project

  • identify and address relevant research questions

  • apply appropriate research methodology and methods

  • demonstrate an ability to undertake ethical and accountable research
