Topic description
This topic aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of the workings of language and the processes of sentence construction. It will attempt to clarify fundamental concepts such as the parts of speech (eg., nouns, verbs) and the correctness of sentences.

While seeking primarily to enhance the analytical skills required for the study of foreign languages, the topic will use examples from English throughout, and thus be of interest to any students wishing to acquire a clearer understanding of elementary grammatical concepts. No knowledge of any foreign language is required or assumed.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:
