Topic description
This topic is an introduction to the study of language, culture and communication in cross cultural contexts. Areas to be studied include contemporary issues in applied linguistics, such as how people negotiate cross-cultural communication, and how language moulds cultural practices and vice-versa.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- provide students with a scientific understanding of cultural contexts and communication in linguistically diverse societies
- introduce students to the development and application of ethnographic tools for use in ethnographic fieldwork
- encourage students to communicate more effectively while enhancing their inter-cultural understanding
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:
- demonstrate their understanding by applying general concepts in specific ethnographic contexts
- design appropriate questionnaires and interview questions in order to carry out an ethnographic task
- evaluate and articulate their own personal beliefs in relation to their observations of communication in cross- (and inter-) cultural contexts
