Topic description
This topic addresses issues of language, culture and communication in contemporary society such as how language moulds cultural practices and how people negotiate workplace communication in culturally diverse settings. Students are encouraged to explore differing norms of interaction across speech communities in everyday encounters and professional contexts and to relate their observations to their own personal beliefs.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with analytical skills for assessing the significance of cultural contexts and communication in linguistically diverse societies

  • develop practice in the skills of ethnographic fieldwork, particularly in everyday encounters and workplace contexts

  • encourage students to communicate more effectively while enhancing their inter-cultural understanding
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate their understanding by applying general concepts in specific ethnographic contexts

  • carry out an ethnographic field project assessing the significance of key concepts in inter-cultural communication

  • effectively articulate their own personal beliefs and assess their values in relation to their observations of inter-cultural communication in a workplace context

  • demonstrate their ability to apply their multiple perspectives in investigating language in a professional context
