Topic description
One of the major issues in international law and international relations are conflicts both between states and internally. This topic will explore causes of conflicts in international relations literature. A particular emphasis will be placed on the rise of terrorism in international relations. The topic will review one of the most important legal regimes applicable in armed conflict is international humanitarian law. What are the implications of conflicts at various levels for state, regional and international stability? An important additional element will also be to study the international legal regime regulating the use of force in international relations.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • become familiar with the international organisations and mechanisms that deal with the causes and conduct of conflict

  • develop an appreciation for the literature in international law and international relations concerning causes and conduct of armed conflict

  • develop an understanding of the international legal regulation of the use of armed force

  • deepen students' understanding of the content and historical development of international humanitarian law
Expected learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this topic will be able to:

  • articulate an understanding of the factors that lead to conflict with a particular understanding of the rise of terrorism

  • describe and provide an analytical overview of the philosophical and legal bases of the use of force in international relations

  • articulate their understanding of the difficulties facing the international community with respect to the prevention of and reaction to armed conflict

  • communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral tasks
