Topic description
This topic comprises 12 weeks of work experience as approved by the topic co-ordinator, and a work plan as approved by the academic supervisor.
Educational aims
Students are required to undertake a period of at least 12 weeks (or an acceptable equivalent) of full-time Cooperative Work Experience with a placement provider, as listed in the University's Calendar. During this period, students will perform a range of Mathematics-related or management tasks.

Each student is expected to:

  1. Contribute to a Mathematics-related project
  2. Understand the structure and operation of the company or organisation, and its responsibilities to shareholders, employees, customers, and the general public
  3. Understand the influences of commercial, economic, social, cultural, political, legal, industrial and environmental issues affecting companies, organisations or employees that undertake Mathematics-related work
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Have an insight and understanding of the nature and complexities of Mathematics-related project work within industrial and / or research organisations
  2. Understand the structure and operation of the company or organisation, and its responsibilities to shareholders, employees, customers, and the general public
  3. Understand the influences of commercial, economic, social, cultural, political, legal, industrial and environmental issues affecting companies, organisations or employees that undertake Mathematics-related work
  4. Appreciate the responsibilities, roles, attitudes, values, priorities, judgement and work methods of professionals practising Mathematics in industry
  5. Communicate effectively in a range of technical and business situations
  6. Exhibit maturity in their own professional attitudes, and reconcile the obligations, responsibilities and actions of professional practising Mathematics with their own values
