Topic description
The Role of Point-of-Care Testing in Disaster Management (MDSC8003) will provide students with an introduction to the principles and practice of disaster management, with specific emphasis on the role of POCT in disaster preparedness and response. Syllabus topics will include:

  • Disaster nomenclature,

  • An introduction to the range of disasters that occur internationally, including a historical and contemporary overviews,

  • Emerging global disaster threats, notably infectious diseases,

  • The planning and preparedness required to mitigate or manage the impact of disasters (including POCT preparedness),

  • Governance and co-ordination of the disaster response (including the role of POCT personnel),

  • The response and recovery phases for disasters (focussing on specific medical responses and health issues in different disaster scenarios),

  • The role of POCT in the immediate and long-term management of patients affected by the disaster, including the range of POCT devices and tests that may be useful in disaster relief,

  • Long-term issues and challenges faced by disaster survivors - the social, emotional, environmental and economic burden.

Educational aims
The Role of Point-of-Care Testing in Disaster Management (MDSC8003) aims to provide students with basic knowledge concerning the strategic and operational principles underpinning disaster planning, preparedness, response and recovery, and specific knowledge concerning the role, scope, applications and organisation of POCT services to support disaster management (with particular emphasis on acute and infectious diseases).
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  • Describe the range of disasters afflicting the world’s population and understand their different public health impacts,

  • Understand the governance and co-ordination strategies required to prepare for and respond to a disaster situation, including preparedness of POCT,

  • Critically analyse the range of POCT devices and tests available for use in disaster situations (with particular emphasis on acute and infectious disease) and appraise their fitness for medical purpose in the disaster response,

  • Apply their knowledge and skills to be able to design and optimise tailored POCT services for specific disaster response situations,

  • Provide advocacy, expertise and leadership for POCT in this emerging specialty field.
