Topic description
This topic introduces students to various themes of Greek history and culture, across a range of epochs. Themes explored may include the influences of other civilisations upon the cultural beliefs and practices of both ancient and contemporary Greece, how belief has impacted on the lives of everyday Greeks, and how Greek culture and lifestyle has been a foundational force for aspects of western culture.
Educational aims
This topic aims to

  • investigate the rituals and beliefs of the Greek world
  • provide students with the opportunity to investigate how Greece has been transformed by, and transformative of, Western culture
  • allow students to explore the continuum of aspects of Greek lifestyle and beliefs that have existed through different epochs
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • discuss aspects of Greek cultures and beliefs, and their influence
  • articulate how aspects of Greek beliefs have been influenced by different cultures
  • critically analyse and present how Greek beliefs, symbols and/or rituals are manifested in different cultures and societies
