Topic description
This topic examines a range of pivotal points in the development of Greek culture and society, from the Minoans to contemporary Greece. Themes examined may include: the Minoan and Cycladic civilisation, the Odyssey and the Iliad, the development of the City State, Alexander the Great, the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire, Greece under Turkish rule and Greece during the 20th and 21st Centuries
Educational aims
This topic aims to

  • introduce students to a diverse range of Greek histories and cultural development
  • provide students with the opportunity to engage with historical and cultural resources, both primary and secondary, to develop knowledge of Greek history
  • reflect on how events of historical importance have influenced the develop of contemporary Greek society
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • analyse a range of source materials, to find connections between the historical and cultural development of Greece
  • communicate, both verbally and in writing, cultural and societal aspects of a range of Greek epochs
  • discuss the influences that have contributed to the development of the Greek nation and/or diaspora
