Topic description
In this topic students further explore themes relating to Greek or Cypriot culture and society as illustrated in a selection of authentic written, aural and/or visual texts. Students may be offered a choice of monographic studies relating to contemporary or earlier texts. Regular offerings include Asia Minor: from antiquity through to modern times, Cyprus: history and tradition, From the point of view of Alexandria, Greek Mythology: Gods, Heroes and Mortals, Modern Greek literature, Greek Migration to Australia.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide further opportunities for the development or consolidation of students' background knowledge of socio-cultural issues related to Greek art, literature and society

  • further develop learners' critical and analytical skills through the study of contemporary or earlier texts, and foster students' involvement in individual research projects
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • summarise and illustrate historical, artistic and social developments related to the cultural component, and use them as context for the interpretation, comparison and critiquing of texts

  • identify and organise relevant research material in order to produce sound academic texts
