Topic description
This topic introduces students to various themes of Greek history from antiquity through to Modern times. Themes examined are: the Minoan and Cycladic civilisation, the Odyssey and the Iliad, the development of the City State, Alexander the Great, the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire, Greece under Turkish and Greece during the 20th Century.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to selective areas of Greek history

  • encourage students to develop critical skills through an examination of historical perspectives
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • recognise, understand, compare and contrast aspects of selective areas of Modern Greek history

  • identify and organise research material and produce related texts

  • present, discuss and debate contemporary issues studied in class
