Topic description
The topic aims to provide each student undertaking a final clinical placement opportunities to consolidate and extend clinical competencies in cognitive behaviour therapy for a range of psychological disorders. The focus of the topic is to ensure that each student has demonstrated competencies in all areas relating to the delivery of CBT. Students will be required to demonstrate sound clinical knowledge and skills in case formulations, structured and collaborative treatment planning and capacity to maintain fidelity to a CBT framework informed by ongoing reflective clinical supervision engagement. Students are required to undertake placement within their current workplace or submit an expression of interest to the Topic Coordinator for alternative options prior to the commencement of the topic. Students are required to meet all pre-placement and fit for placement requirements prior to undertaking the practicum.
Educational aims
The topic aims to offer each student a structured, clinical framework to consolidate and extend adherence and competence in the delivery of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). Students are provided with ongoing clinical supervision to refine and advance clinical skills and reflective practice techniques. It is expected that on completion students will be proficient and competent to provide a range of CBT interventions to people experiencing psychological disorders as recognised by national and international accreditation organisations.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of the topic students should be able to:

  • Competently undertake clinical assessments, administer and interpret clinical measures and develop collaborative treatment programs using a range of psychological interventions grounded in evidence for high prevalence mental health disorders.

  • Contribute to evolving and innovative service models in mental health care.

  • Establish sound therapeutic relationships with clients, carers, and other relevant support networks to enhance recovery and support self-efficacy. Recognise clinical supervision frameworks that are competency-based and reciprocal by design that enhance lifelong learning and build knowledge and skills across a continuum.

  • Maintain a scope of practice that enhances effectiveness and maintains high standards of care for those who seek to access focused psychological therapies. Differentiate between a range of clinical disorders and determine collaboratively tailored cognitive and behavioural treatment plans that are empirically supported. Establish standards of practice that are nationally and internationally regarded to be those of a proficient and capable cognitive behaviour therapist. .
