Students must enrol in and complete this topic and MHSC9033B Research Project B in two consecutive semesters as both topics are taught and assessed as a continuum.

Topic description
The topic provides students with a comprehensive and critical perspective on current literature in mental health and related areas to support the development of a research project. Areas included are relevant theories and research designs, strengths and weaknesses of methodologies used. The topic is delivered as an intensive 2-day workshop. Also included are statistical methods and research design models in mental health and related areas, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, ethics in research and identifying journals of relevance.
Educational aims

The topic aims to provide students with more in depth theoretical and empirical support, and further scaffolding, towards the research proposal developed in MHSC9026. Completion of this topic will enable a student to critically evaluate research methods and also identify relevant and up to date literature to support and construct a research question. The topic covers: literature reviews; ethical and statistical methodologies; citation databases; and critiquing research in mental health and related areas.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of the topic students should be able to:

  • Identify and/or refine a research question related to psychological or behavioural sciences.

  • Critically appraise empirical and conceptual literature in the area of high prevalence psychological disorders and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

  • Undertake scholarly writing of research consistent with accepted academic and professional standards.
