Topic description
This topic introduces students to the foundational knowledge and skills related to clinical midwifery care. Students will explore the role of midwives in the health setting, including working within a multidisciplinary team. They will develop midwifery competencies and skills for reflective practice in the midwifery laboratory and on clinical placement.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to introduce students to beginning midwifery clinical practice.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of midwifery care for childbearing women and babies
  2. Demonstrate foundational professional and clinical skills for midwifery practice
  3. Demonstrate a beginning understanding of medical and midwifery terminology
  4. Explain the importance of written and computerised documentation
  5. Demonstrate the ability to apply work health and safety policies into clinical practice
