Students are assumed to have a foundational knowledge of general anatomy and physiology.

Assignments; Examination; Clinical Placement

This topic focuses on consolidating students’ health assessment and physical examination skills required to provide comprehensive midwifery care for the mother and newborn infant. The topic includes the concepts of health education and promotion, family dynamics and sexuality. Students will build on their knowledge of physical science and apply it in their clinical placement.

The aim of this topic is to consolidate students capacity to undertake health assessment and physical examination of the childbearing woman and infant.

At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

Apply an understanding of anatomy and physiology to the comprehensive assessment of the childbearing woman and the newborn infant
Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the childbearing woman from the initial confirmation of pregnancy through to completion of the puerperium
Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the newborn infant
Demonstrate professional verbal and written communication skills including referral where appropriate
