Assumed knowledge
It is assumed that students will have a basic understanding of the physical sciences and human anatomy and physiology (MIDW1004A and HLTH1004) gained from the topics studied in the first year of the Bachelor of Midwifery. In addition, it will be assumed that the students will have an understanding of the maternal physiological adaptations of reproduction (MIDW1008) and beginning midwifery practice skills gained in the topic Midwifery Skills.

Topic description
This topic focuses on the significance of pharmacology and medication management in pregnancy, labour and birth, the postpartum period and the neonateneonatal care. The material presentedtopic will address aspects of pharmacology of prescribed and non-prescribed drugs, including complementary therapies, over-the-counter drugs and recreational drugs. This will enable the midwife to understand the pharmacological aspects of midwifery practice when caring for the woman and baby during the child-bearing period. students to integrate principles of pharmacology and medication management into their midwifery practice.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with knowledge, skills and competence in clinical pharmacology and medication administration in midwifery practice.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the effect of pregnancy on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
  2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of commonly prescribed drug groups in midwifery practice (pharmacotherapy) for the childbearing woman, fetus and neonate
  3. Discuss drug interactions and polypharmacy
  4. Explain the potential effect of drugs on the developing fetus, neonate and breastfeeding infant
  5. Appraise medication management of the pregnant woman using the principles of Quality Use of Medicines as described by the National Prescribing Services
  6. Identify and critically analyse ethical and legal issues in medication management
