Assumed knowledge
It is assumed that students have a foundational knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and medication management, and midwifery skills for the care of the woman without complexities during pregnancy, birth and the post-natal period.

Topic description
This topic will focus on the midwifery care of the childbearing woman with complex medical needs.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to prepare the student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for women experiencing a pre-existing or arising medical complexity of pregnancy, labour and birth and/or the postnatal period.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of pathophysiology of pre-existing and arising medical conditions to midwifery practice
  2. Identify medical complexities of pre-conception, pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period
  3. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care of the childbearing woman with complex medical needs
  4. Describe and interpret investigations and diagnostic tests that may be ordered for the woman with complex medical needs
  5. Critically examine the importance of multi-disciplinary care and appropriate referral to provide in the care of women with complex medical needs
  6. Demonstrate ability to care for the childbearing woman requiring high dependency maternity care
  7. Apply knowledge of research evidence, clinical sciences and pharmacology to inform decision making and clinical midwifery practice
