Topic description
This topic will enable students to undertake an in-depth study of midwifery models of care. They will identify different midwifery models of care and critically analyse issues that impact on the provision of care within the different models. They will consider ethical, legal, political and sociocultural aspects of the different midwifery models of care. They will critically examine the role of the midwife in the different models of care which will include resource management and leadership.
Educational aims
This topic will allow the registered midwife to study midwifery models of care. The topic is designed to enable the registered midwife to reflect on their own midwifery practice and determine whether they would like to make changes to a different model of midwifery practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • critically analyse contemporary models of midwifery practice

  • critically explore the impact of government policy developments that impact on maternity care

  • critically explore the ethical, safety and quality issues related to models of care

  • identify the legal requirements in midwifery

  • discuss factors to be considered in advocating for women and enabling empowerment for women and their significant others in midwifery practice

  • work effectively as a team member in any model of midwifery care

  • explore the role of the midwife in different models of midwifery care

  • meet the graduate qualities of Flinders University.
