Topic description
The topic will give an introduction to human genetics, modes of inheritance, and an overview of human chromosomes at the cytogenetic and molecular levels. The human genome will be discussed at the molecular level and biological mechanisms that modify human inheritance will be studied. An introduction to molecular genetic techniques used in diagnosis of human genetic disease will be presented in the context of specific diseases.

The topic will be taught with Team Based Learning (TBL), an interactive, small group method of self-directed teaching and learning which is utilised in numerous universities and medical schools, including Flinders University Doctor of Medicine degree.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with a broad knowledge of contemporary issues in human genetics, in particular detailed understanding of the applications of genetic techniques to human disease.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should have:

  • a broad knowledge of human molecular genetics

  • a detailed understanding of the applications of genetic techniques to human disease

  • knowledge of contemporary issues in human genetics

  • an application of knowledge to problem solving in human genetics.
