Topic description
This topic addresses the use of drugs in the treatment of human disease and illness. A systematic approach to drug therapy will used to provide a framework to gain an in-depth knowledge of how a drug's pharmacokinetic characteristics and mechanisms of action at the molecular level relate to its pharmacological effects in humans. Lectures and tutorials on the major drug classes will be followed by case studies that facilitate the application of principles and the examination of the impact of factors that affect drug use.

To provide students with an understanding of how drugs are used to treat human disease and illness and the factors that affect their use.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should have:
- an understanding of the drugs used to treat specific pathophysiological disorders in humans.
- the ability to apply pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to the use of individual drug classes in the treatment of specific disorders in humans.
- an understanding of the factors (genetic, disease-related, environmental etc.) that affect the use of drugs.
