Topic description
Students participate in programmed sessions dealing with communication and patient interaction skills, introductory clinical procedures, history taking and physical examination in medical practice. The following knowledge, skills and procedures are introduced: clinical interviewing; communication skills; history taking; physical examination; verbal and written presentation skills; introductory procedures including first aid, resuscitation, basic emergency care; ethical and legal concerns related to clinical skills; personal development including student-patient, student-hospital, student-doctor and student-allied health professional relationships; the effects of gender, class and ethnicity on communication; and the development of professional relationships.
Educational aims
This course aims to provide an introduction to clinical skills and the clinical environment.

Students are expected to develop a basic competence in:

  • Communication skills

  • Patient interaction

  • Clinical history taking

  • Physical examination

  • Patient presentation skills (written and verbal)

  • Basic Life support

  • Clinical procedures

Expected learning outcomes
By the end of semester 1, the students should demonstrate competence to:

  • Establish rapport with patients

  • Demonstrate acceptable standards of professional behaviour with patients, staff and students

  • Communicate effectively with patients, including active listening, and understanding the effects of non verbal communication

  • Understand the patient¿s agenda and their experience of their health condition

  • Gather information effectively and sensitively from patients about their presenting problem

  • Take a complete history including past illnesses, family, social history, and medications

  • Write up patient histories in a clear and logical fashion

  • Present a verbal patient history

  • Collect and document a patient¿s vital signs

  • Perform screening examinations on patients

  • Formulate a problem list for the patient

  • Provide explanations and information giving to patients.
