Topic description
The topic is an integrated practical and theoretical introduction to the practice of medicine, surgery, rehabilitation & chronic care. Students participate in programmed sessions dealing with communication and patient interaction skills, clinical procedures, history taking and physical examination in medical practice. The following knowledge, skills & procedures are reinforced & developed as part of the Transition to Clinical Practice program embedded in this topic: clinical interviewing, communication skills, history taking, physical examination, intimate examinations, verbal and written presentation skills, clinical procedures, basic and intermediate emergency care, ethical and legal concerns related to clinical skills; personal development, student-patient, student-hospital, student-doctor and student-allied health professional relationships; the effects of gender, class and ethnicity on communication and the development of professional relationships.

Note: Students are required to complete a 4 day Nursing Attachment as part of their clinical skills topics throughout Years 1 and 2 of the MD. The Nursing Attachment can be completed anytime during the topics MMED8101, MMED8102, MMED8201 or MMED8202, however the assessment forms part of the MMED8202 topic and must be completed satisfactorily prior to the completion of this topic.”
Educational aims
The topic aims to continue to familiarise students with the scientific basis of medicine by providing them with knowledge of the normal structure and function of the human body at the molecular, cellular, organ and total individual levels of organisation. In addition the more practical aspects of medical practice are given greater emphasis than before in order to prepare students for their clinical placements in the following year.

Students are expected to develop competence in:

  • communication skills

  • patient interaction

  • clinical history taking

  • physical examination

  • patient presentation skills (written and verbal)

  • basic/Intermediate Life support

  • clinical procedures

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to readily establish rapport with patients and to interact appropriately and sensitively during history and examination.

  2. Demonstrate competence in clinical history taking and physical examination of all body systems, including the ability to describe normal and abnormal findings, to formulate a reasonable diagnosis and to explain their reasoning.

  3. Demonstrate competence in presenting the clinical history and examination findings in a comprehensive and succinct written and verbal format, including summary and problem list.

  4. Develop competence in the procedural skills required for years 3&4 (including revision of all procedural skills taught in years 1&2), including Intermediate Life Support.

  5. Demonstrate an understanding the principles of Chronic Care Self management and skills of chronic care.

  6. Demonstrate an understanding the principles of pharmacology, as demonstrated by their analysis of a drug in the written assignment.

  7. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the knowledge related to clinical skills and be able to apply this knowledge in the clinical reasoning process.

  8. Develop an understanding of the workings of the health system through observation, attendance and performance under supervision and to demonstrate the professional behavior required for working within the health system.
