Assignments; Project
Topic description
There are two self-study assignments in this topic supported by web-based materials on FLO.

The Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) assignment is designed to demonstrate the students¿ translation of evidence-based medicine into their clinical practice, and specifically, the students¿ capacity to translate an area of clinical uncertainty into specific questions and then seek answers through critical appraisal of the scientific literature.

A Clinical Audit (CA) Project is assessed by a 3,000 word report. The audit should be relevant to a clinical placement during Year 4. The purpose of this assignment is to teach students the basic principles of quality improvement, application of simple measurement and auditing tools and analysis of simple data. The student will be expected to produce a report on their audit recommending specific quality improvements.

Ethics, Law and Professionalism Portfolios

Students are required to complete their portfolio in Year 4 and complete an interview with their assigned mentor. Details are given in the year 4 Course and Assessment booklet.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to give student practical skills in evidence based medicine and clinical audits, as key skills in quality clinical practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • Describe and apply the basic principles of clinical quality improvement as a routine part of quality clinical practice

  • Demonstrate and ability to apply simple measurement and auditing tools to a clinical problem

  • Demonstrate basic data analysis skills

  • Produce a professional audit report with recommendations for specific quality improvements

  • Apply previous learning on critical appraisal of the literature to identify and report the evidence in literature that informs best management of a clinical problem seen during clinical placements.
