Topic description
This topic provides a range of activities aimed at preparing students for the transition to internship. Learning and teaching activities focus on practical application of knowledge in the clinical setting. Subjects covered include generic skills, medical emergencies, and practical transition to medical practice.
Educational aims
Professional Induction to Clinical Practice will be a capstone topic providing students with work ready knowledge, skills and health professional behaviour as required for the junior doctor role.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • Understand the extent and nature of harm arising from the provision of health care within complex health care systems

  • Understand the nature of human error and the critical role that system design plays in improving patient safety

  • Knowledge of methods commonly used to assess risk in health care

  • Awareness of issues that should be considered when dealing with and managing patient complaints or adverse events

  • Increased knowledge of techniques that can be used to identify the underlying cause of an adverse event

  • Practical experience of on-call emergencies including in-hospital resuscitation

  • Experience with an online rehearsal of the clinical reasoning required for working through on emergency cases

  • Understand the ethical issues likely to be encountered in the junior doctor setting and how to approach these

  • Understand the role of functioning health care teams in patent safety and emergency care, and the factors that contribute to and disrupt team functioning

  • Awareness of the students own state of preparedness for the intern role and plans for further development.
