Topic description
This topic, which is divided into five modules, addresses issues of drug safety and the current legal and ethical boundaries operating for health professionals. Additional insight will be gained into medication management issues affected by age, and those influenced by socioeconomic and sociocultural factors. In depth knowledge will be gained through critical examination of key drug classes and extended by reference to drugs in areas of special practice.
Educational aims
The topic Pharmacology for Advanced Professional Practice aims to assist students to build further on their knowledge of pharmacology and therapeutics that can be utilised in the advanced practice setting. The specified learning outcomes will encourage safe medication management within current legal and ethical boundaries.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • Identify the major drug classes used within their speciality area and apply advanced knowledge of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics to inform advanced clinical decision making.

  • make appropriate decisions about pharmacotherapeutics within the context of culturally appropriate practice taking into account a person's wishes and values in prescribing decisions

  • demonstrate strategies for prescribing safely, appropriately and effectively, and monitoring response to drug therapy

  • demonstrate knowledge of local and national guidelines that inform evidence based practice

  • articulate the legislative requirements and ethical issues pursuant to quality use of medicines
