Advanced Studies Capstone is the topic where all students (research and coursework) showcase their professionally relevant skills and knowledge in a specialised area of interest, through their portfolio of work, which they have acquired over the four years of the medical course. Students will have their scholarship activities assessed in three assessment parts, namely through:

a refereed outcome (such as publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and conference presentation);
demonstration of progress; and
evidence of engagement with a relevant geographical, demographic or craft-group community.

The aim of this topic is to showcase the student’s skills and knowledge in a specialized area. This will be captured in various forms, including evidence of peer reviewed publications and or presentations and evidence of community engagement with a relevant geographical, demographic or craft-group community.

On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

Apply extensive knowledge of research design and methods to a scientific, community or clinical context
Analyse, interpret and critically appraise research outcomes and data using conceptual frameworks grounded in relevant fields
Extend and advance personal knowledge in a specialised area of biological, clinical, epidemiological, social and/or behavioural sciences that will enhance professional practice and/or build professional capacity
Identify and exercise ethical responsibilities in reviewing processes in the conduct of research
Self-reflect and improve professional practice
Demonstrate a high standard of personal and professional behaviour as part of a collaborative or interprofessional team
Demonstrate leadership in a specialised area of health practice
Communicate acquired knowledge of expertise to a variety of audiences to relevant community and professional audiences, potentially using new technologies and systems
Demonstrate the significance of Advanced Studies work to the community and/or the profession in relevant contexts.
