Topic description
This topic serves to allow candidates to link coursework directly to their current practice or future career plans. The syllabus builds on candidate¿s competencies in dealing with musculoskeletal dysfunction through emphasising the interaction between the knowledge, skills and attitudes associated the diverse biological, psychological and social aspects of dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system.

Candidates develop a portfolio including a log of patients presenting with musculoskeletal dysfunction. The reflective log itemises history, diagnosis, investigations, referrals and treatment. This portfolio is discussed in terms of published data and material and experiences covered in the course.

The topic provides candidates with a vocational focus, fostering clarity on matching their learning goals to their daily activities and encouraging candidates to investigate and reflect on their practice in the light of the evidence base for a range of approaches to musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Candidates develop their understanding of the role of other health professionals and specialists in the management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and disorders.
Educational aims
The topic enables students to match their learning and practice with the research into the care of musculoskeletal dysfunction. Through a critical appraisal of their practice, candidates will investigate the guidelines of professional bodies and agencies.

Candidates will further their ability to locate their own practice within the broad professional community associated with the care of patients requiring treatment for musculoskeletal injuries and disorders.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • critically evaluate their practice through systematic audit and reference to published guidelines

  • investigate the evidence base for particular approaches to diagnosis, investigation, treatment and rehabilitation

  • search the existing literature on a specific topic and present an analysis that could be developed for publication in a relevant refereed journal

  • develop skills and experience in communicating with colleagues and other professionals.
