Topic description
This topic provides for the development of a literature review with or without a research project.

Candidates undertake a review of their practice and/or of the evidence for particular strategies for the care of patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Candidates opting for a strong research focus may use this topic to establish a research direction suitable for Masters study in the Master of Surgery.

This topic also allows candidates who require a research project as part of the admission for fellowship of a college or faculty to undertake a suitable project.

The topic chosen must be approved in writing by the Course Coordinator.
Educational aims
The topic enables students to develop their skills and knowledge in undertaking a systematic and rigorous evaluation of practice and literature.

Students will also be able to extend their understanding of the different research methodologies suitable for clinical or social investigations.

Students are encouraged to explore the value and applicability of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • critically evaluate their practice through systematic audit and reference to published guidelines

  • investigate the evidence base for particular approaches to diagnosis, investigation, treatment and rehabilitation

  • search the existing literature on a specific topic and present an analysis that could be developed for publication in a relevant refereed journal

  • develop skills and experience in communicating with colleagues and other professionals.
