Topic description
This topic introduces student to the nursing profession and independent learning. These two areas are intertwined in preparing students to study successfully and to develop the required knowledge, skills and attributes required of a Registered nurse.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  1. Explore and construct an understanding of the professional knowledge, skills and attributes required for a registered nurse as determined by the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards of Practice, Code of conduct and Code of ethics for nurses, and relevant State and National legislation within the Australian Healthcare context

  2. Develop skills and capabilities to support independent learning for successful transition to university, the nursing profession and lifelong learning.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate foundational knowledge of the professional roles and responsibilities of registered nurses, inclusive of law and ethics and requirements of governing bodies in Australia

  2. Articulate the professional knowledge, skills and attributes required for safe and competent nursing practice, promoting the fundamentals of care

  3. Examine the registered nurse role with the Australian healthcare context

  4. Demonstrate skills and capabilities to promote successful transition to university, nursing and progression through the Bachelor of Nursing program

  5. Discuss strategies, resources and tools identified to facilitate own learning and promote lifelong learning.
